Why is steel bar cold drawn?

We know steel bar has many kinds of condition such as Hot Rolled Steel Bar, Cold Drawn Steel Bar, forged steel bar and heat treated steel bar. Do you know why is steel bar cold drawn?

Steel bar is cold drawn because the end user need more precision diameter, higher tensile strength and better surface. Cold Drawn Steel bar can not change the diameters, it also changes the mechanical properties, especially tensile strength and yield strength. But cold drawn steel bar elongation will be reduced by cold drawing.

Taking 1045 steel material for example, 1045 hot rolled steel bar tensile strength is about 600MPa, Yield strength about 380MPa, Elongation about 16% to 20%. After cold drawing, both yeild strength and tensile strength can be more than 100MPa higher. Elongation may reduce 5 to 10% according to different hot rolled condition.

If you want to guarantee the mechanical proeprties for cold drawn steel bar. It is better to do heat treatment to get your preferable and sutable usage. Therefore, when you choose the steel bar, telling your end usage for the bar is more important.
