Benefits of Sumo Deadlifts

Benefits of Sumo Deadlifts
More flexible than regular power bars: Deadlifting on regular bars means pulling from "dead", in other words, from zero to 100% of your weight at a time. However, with a more flexible bar, the center of the bar will rise 3 or 4 inches before the weight starts to lift, and as they do, the inner plate will lift first, moving to the outer edge. The result of this is a smoother, more progressive acceleration of the weight, allowing you to lift more of the actual weight. Most lifters who use deadlifts will tell you that they can lift 40 or 50 pounds more with a deadlift than with a standard power bar.
Thinner than regular power bars: Most power bars are 29 or 30mm, and StrongArm deadlifts are 27mm. This thinness helps improve flexibility and also allows more of your hands and fingers to wrap around the bar. It is especially important to use the double overhand "hook" grip.
Longer Sleeves Than Regular Barbells: Longer sleeves can hold more weight, especially necessary when using a fitness board, as it tends to be wider than a competition board. The long shaft also contributes to the progressive pull that the DL shaft is known for.
Knurling where you need it: not where you don't. Sumo deadlifts are replacing powerlifting. However, the 99.9 bars you see sumo wrestlers use are made for traditional deadlifts, and they end up grabbing the bar in the smooth parts, at least in part, while the knurls will be on their legs during the pull friction. We think we can do better. So we designed a bar with knurling in the middle, where the hands are, and no knurling where it slides over the legs.
