Types of Knurling for Weightlifting Barbell Bars

In the gym, the barbell is the most common training equipment, and the more common it is, the easier it is for people to ignore the details. For example, each bar has a fine pattern called "knurling" engraved on it, which increases the friction of the trainer's grip on the bar, giving them a firmer grip. However, the knurling on the barbell may cause secondary injury if you are not careful! Have you ever noticed that the knurling on this barbell is the same or different? According to the purpose of training, barbells can be divided into weightlifting, powerlifting and bodybuilding. (Discussed here are Standard Barbell Bars and plates, excluding equipment used in tire deadlifts, car deadlifts, etc. in brawny competitions).
One of the knurling types:
Rhombus, this knurling consists of many rhombus with sharp protrusions in the middle, so it is named "rhombus", also known as "pointed mountain". This type of "knurling" allows these tiny, sharp protrusions to wedge the skin of the trainer's palm when gripping the bar, making the bar more integrated with the palm of the hand and less likely to slip or fall out of the hand. In actual training, especially when the training weight is heavy, or the training action requires high grip strength (such as deadlift), these sharp protrusions can easily tear the skin of the trainer's palm as the bar rolls. cause pain or even bleeding.

The second type of knurling: "snake skin pattern" Pingdingshan
Refers to the design that makes up the knurled surface that resembles snake skin. The flat top design can undoubtedly avoid the inconvenience of tearing the palm and scratching the calf, but it also affects the effect of increasing friction, adding additional difficulties to the trainer.

Knurling Type 3: "Volcano"

Like the "Peak Mountain", it protrudes upwards, but the top is a knurling composed of round pits and diamonds. Because these pits are very similar to the craters left after the eruption of volcanoes, people call it "volcano" vividly. ". When gripping a bar with "volcano" knurling, the skin in the palm of the hand squeezes into the dimples at the top of the raised diamond under the force of the grip compared to the "hill", allowing the skin to bond more tightly to the bar together, increased friction. At the same time, because the top is no longer a sharp protrusion, but a circular dimple, the stress on the skin is dispersed, which greatly reduces the probability of tearing the palm and scratching the calf. Therefore, in the current barbell manufacturing process, "volcano" is considered to be the most ideal type of knurling.
