Auto steel – steel bar for gear box, steering gear, engine gear. An auto gear is a kind of toothed wheel designed to transmit torque to another gear or toothed component in automobile. There are many auto gears in auto gear box in automatic transmission.

Major steel materials for auto gears:

• Low Carbon Steel for Structural Machine Usage
Materials: S15CK, AISI 1020, SAE 1020, S20C, C22,
Low-carbon steel. High hardness is obtained by Carburizing. The core is ductile but little strength. It is easier to be machined for wear resistant gears.

• Medium Carbon Steel for Structural Machine Usage
Materials: S45C, C45, AISI 1045, SAE 1045, AISI 1140,
Medium carbon steel is most commonly used for steel gears. In general , medium and large sizes require moderate strength and wear resistance. The steel materials will be hardened by quenching and tempering. Oil quenching to get lower hardness and water quenching to get higher hardness.

• Cr-Mo Alloy steel for Machine Structural Use
JIS Material No. : SCM435, SCM430, SCM440, AISI 4130, AISI 4135, AISI 4140, 42CrMo4 etc.
Medium-carbon alloy steel is used to produce greater wear resistant steel gears. These materials has higher strength in hot rolled condition and greater strength after induction quenching and tempering.

• Cr-Ni-Mo Alloy steel for Machine Structural Use
JIS Material No. : SNCM439, AISI 4340, SAE 4340, 36CrNiMo4
Medium carbon alloy steel with Cr-Ni-Mo has high strength and wear resistance and high shock loading resistance.

• Gear Steel materials Alloy steel for Machine Structural Use
Material: SCM415, SCM420, 18CrMo4, AISI 4120, 20MnCr5, 20CrMnTi, 20CrMnTih, SNC815, AISI 8620, AISI 8620H, SNCM420, SNCM220
